The PERFORM project was implemented from 2018 to 2021, funded by the Interreg V-A Latvia – Lithuania CBC Programme 2014-2020. The objective of the cooperation is to promote the social (and educational) integration of young people with SEN by collecting good practices, organising training and compiling a single pilot model that provides an overview of different types of integration and educational methods.

The project activities approached the inclusion and development of children with SEN from several angles. They identified the main points of convergence in the development of young people with SEN by developing an organisational model, collecting good practices and producing a guide. To achieve this, they assessed initial situation in the two countries (available services in terms of education and rehabilitation), studied the solutions in other countries and finally produced a guide based on the experience gathered. In addition, an online monitoring system was set up to measure the benefits and effectiveness of inclusion services for pupils with SEN and their parents. This will help to identify areas for improvement.

They have helped to develop the social and communication skills of students with SEN and established new contacts by organising three international summer camps and a ten-day exchange programme.

Since parents of children with SEN can make a significant contribution to the balanced development of their children, in case of the necessary information and professional skills, special training courses for parents have been set up. The focus of the trainings was on assessing different stressors, overcoming obstacles in daily life, developing the necessary communication skills and preparing for independent life.

In addition, in-person training has been provided to ensure that highly qualified professionals can sustain the results of the project and organise further training for teachers in the future. The training material covered effective education of children with SEN and preparation for adulthood.

Finally, in Kaišiadorys (Lithuania), a well-equipped “Therapy Studio” has been set up, which can be used effectively to develop concentration, communication, motor skills, social interaction and creativity of children with SEN.[1]
