Komárno is the first stop on the Slovak side of the border in the series of reference group workshops

06 March 2024

Within the #ACCESS project Komárno was the first Slovak location of the reference group workshops . The event was held on February 28, 2024, at the Pons Danubii FabLab and it provided a platform for stakeholders from Komárno (SK) and Komárom (HU) to deliberate on enhancing cross-border cooperation. The meeting underscored the longstanding ties between the two cities since the regime change, emphasising the need to formalise and strengthen these connections to address shared challenges and capitalise on mutual opportunities.

Participants at the workshop discussed various fields of cooperation, shedding light on key areas requiring attention and concerted efforts. One theme was the need to streamline regulations, particularly concerning logistics and transportation. The planned international logistics centre, envisioned as a cornerstone of joint development, faces obstacles due to disparate regulations governing water transportation. Participants recognised the importance of harmonising these regulations to unlock the potential of cross-border logistics projects.

Environmental conservation emerged as another focal point, with participants acknowledging the complexities arising from differing waste management systems and regulatory frameworks. While Komárno has made strides in implementing composting facilities, a separate waste management system will be developed in Komárom. Instead, the capacities of Komárno should be exploited.

In the respect of healthcare, complementarity can be identified. While Komárno boasts advanced medical facilities, Komárom lags behind. Participants stressed the importance of integrating healthcare services to optimise resource utilisation and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for residents across both cities.

Education mobility also garnered attention, with stakeholders highlighting the obstacles posed by discrepancies in the recognition of qualifications across the border. Addressing these barriers was deemed essential to facilitate bilingual education programs and promote academic exchange, thereby fostering a more dynamic and inclusive educational landscape.

Throughout the workshop, stakeholders articulated their commitment to overcoming existing challenges and leveraging shared resources to foster sustainable growth and development in both Komárno and Komárom. The meeting served as a catalyst for deeper engagement and collaboration, laying the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at enhancing cross-border cooperation and realising the full potential of this dynamic partnership.
