Insights from the #ACCESS project reference group in Lučenec

08 March 2024

On March 5, 2024, the city of Lučenec, located in the heart of the Novohrad/Nógrád region, hosted the next event under the #ACCESS project, which seeks to enhance cross-border cooperation and address the obstacles hindering it. The workshop highlighted a collective effort towards realising the potential of cross-border integration between Hungary and Slovakia.

A central theme of the discussion was the nuanced relationship between Fiľakovo, Salgótarján, and Lučenec, each playing a unique role in the cross-border dynamic. Despite similar socio-economic and real estate environments, the lack of significant migration or business expansion across the border points to a need for targeted development strategies to encourage greater integration.

The workshop explored various domains for potential cooperation, from addressing the logistical challenges in transportation to revitalising brownfield sites and enhancing tourism through initiatives like the unique cross-border geopark. The role of education and the movement of workers and students across the border were identified as critical factors influencing the region’s socio-economic landscape.

The discussion emphasised the importance of collective action in addressing shared challenges, particularly in transportation infrastructure, with the restoration of the Lučenec-Salgótarján railway connection highlighted as a priority. Additionally, the joint coordination of the geopark and disaster management reflects a recognition of shared natural and cultural heritage as a foundation for cross-border cooperation.

The insights from the workshop suggest a path forward that leverages cultural, educational, and economic synergies to foster a more integrated and prosperous cross-border region. Moreover, the event underscored the necessity of involving relevant ministries and stakeholders in future discussions to ensure the development of coherent and comprehensive strategies for cross-border collaboration.
