TOGETHER FOR A BETTER EDUCATIONAL INTEGRATION OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Within the Romania – Moldova ENPI programme 2014-2020, a specific project promoted inclusive education for children with SEN. The activities were implemented over a period of 18 months (2020-2022), during which time a joint cross-border education network was established.[1]

The project aims to create personalised and quality educational opportunities for children with special educational needs. The partnership has trained 10 professionals who will provide the long-term sustainability of the project and the basis for a transnational education network. These trainers have the necessary knowledge to train teachers, with a special focus on the education of pupils with SEN. Thanks to the work of the trainers, approximately 200 teachers and 2 000 parents have already been introduced to the methods and importance of inclusive education.

It provided an opportunity to exchange good practice between the 10 schools involved in the development, deepen integration between children, organise integration programmes (e.g. extra-curricular activities) and explore as well as exploit the special skills of children with SEN. Tailor-made specialised services (e.g. therapy, school counselling, etc.) and educational materials have been developed, thus raising the educational quality of schools.

The project has supported the academic progress of 100 students with SEN, providing them with the institutional framework for school counselling and the necessary educational tools/methods, guidance and specific activities. The results achieved are sustained by a cross-border education network of 10 trainers, who continue to provide training for teachers in the region.
