Following the regime change, cross-border cooperation in the Czech Forest area became possible, which intensified with the accession of the Czech Republic to the Schengen area. The two national parks concerned (Šumava National Park and Bavarian Forest National Park) are at the forefront of the coordination of forestry and tourism management. Thanks to their cooperation, they have established a joint information centre at the Bučina border crossing point (for pedestrians and cyclists), shared a survey of Natura 2000 sites of the two national parks, developed cross-border hiking trails and standardised the multimedia and printed promotional material in two languages. Their efforts have gained international recognition, earning cross-border certification in 2009 and 2015.
In 2019, another successful project was implemented to establish joint forest management. A 10 hectare area in the border zone was designated for study, and a LIDAR field survey was carried out. The aim of the activity is to monitor the long-term forest structure and population and to promote the coordinated protection and management of natural assets.[1] The resulting unified vegetation map will serve as a basis for further cooperation and strategic planning.[2]
