Cross-border cooperation between the Hungarian National Museum and the Esterházy Castle in Želiezovce

29 May 2024

The Hungarian National Museum and the Esterházy Castle in Želiezovce have signed an agreement within the framework of the Slovakia-Hungary Interreg Programme, with the support of the European Development Fund.

The cooperation will include large-scale developments in the Castle Museum in Esztergom, including the reconstruction of the castle wall and the modernisation of the exhibition space. In addition, new museum rooms will be opened to the public, such as the space of the Studiolo, decorated with Botticelli paintings.

At the same time, the Esterházy Castle in Želiezovce also will be renovated. The programme will include the reconstruction of the south-eastern part of the building, which will then be used for cultural and educational purposes. The Hungarian National Museum also offered training opportunities for local professionals who provide services in the castle. The exchange of knowledge will be mutual, as the Municipality of Želiezovce will also share their experiences gained from organising events for the Norwegian Fund Project.

The programme will also include an archaeological excavation of the St. James Church in Želiezovc0e, in cooperation with the Catholic Church.
