In order to protect the natural values of the northern border between Germany and the Netherlands and to serve the needs of the nature tourism in the area, a cross-border nature park was created in 2006. The 140 km2 nature reserve, which covers the areas of Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim (DE) and Drenthe (NL), pays special attention to environmental education in addition to recreation and habitat restoration.[1]

The nature park will liaise and coordinate the work of experts from the Dutch and German sides, ensure the monitoring of the site and the enforcement of conservation measures, and contribute to scientific research and data collection. The nature park is also responsible for carrying out maintenance work and environmental education.

As a cross-border tourist destination, they produce multilingual publications and maintain a website. The nature park has dozens of hiking trails, which are described in detail on the website. In addition to hiking trails, special routes have been created for those interested in cycling and geocaching. In addition to the signposted routes, there is also a database of the area’s viewpoints and major landmarks.
