The cooperation between three nature reserves on the Norwegian-Finnish border (Käsivarsi Wilderness Area [FI], Reisa National Park [NO] and Ráisduottarháldi Protected Landscape [NO]) has resulted in the creation of a single cross-border nature reserve (Háldi TBA). The integration was implemented in 2020 thanks to the Interreg Nord programme. The framework for cooperation was guaranteed by the signing of a convention and the establishment of a Joint Management Board, which aims to coordinate the administrative and operational tasks of the protected areas and to preserve their natural and cultural values.
Thanks to the Háldi TBA, knowledge flow and sharing of good practices has been facilitated, there is greater scope for unified action, project development is coordinated and progress has been made towards the creation of a single tourism management. However, a common website has not yet been established and details of the cooperation are available on the respective websites of the protected areas. In the information centres of the partnership partners (Kilpisjärvi Nature Center, Halti National Park Center), visitors can learn about the tourism opportunities and hiking trails on the other side of the border thanks to jointly elaborated maps, exhibitions and posters.[1] Overall, the project has harmonised the management of the nature reserves and is currently in the process of standardising the hiking trails.[2]
