The Kosterhavet and Ytre Hvaler national parks along the Skagerrak Strait have formed a close partnership. On both the Norwegian and Swedish side, rowing along the archipelagos and on the lakes and artificially created channels is a popular and well-developed sport and tourism potential. The Kosterhavet National Park explicitly promotes organised cross-border kayaking and maintains a database of organisations organising water tours and facilities (e.g. camping sites) for hikers.[1]
The Swedish-Norwegian cooperation has resulted in a joint publication on cross-border rowing opportunities. The brochure describes possible routes, as well as kayak rental and tour operators on the Swedish and Norwegian sides and their services.[2]
The organised tours in nature reserves, national parks have a specific list of prohibitions for kayakers. These include periods when boating is prohibited and restrictions on access to certain stretches of coastline. Most of these protection measures are necessary because of the birds that breed on the shores.
